Cancel an envelope

Cancelling an envelope closes it before it completes: the signing links are deactivated immediately and the envelope moves to the Cancelled status. Use this action to withdraw an envelope sent by mistake, with the wrong document or with a signer missing, and then send a new one.

Envelopes can be cancelled by those who hold that permission in the envelope’s workspace:

  • the workspace manager;
  • the organization’s administrators, who have access to every workspace.

Contributors create and send envelopes; to cancel one, they ask the workspace manager or an administrator. See Organizations, workspaces and roles.

You can cancel an envelope in Draft, Sent or In Progress. Envelopes in Completed, Cancelled or Expired are already closed.

Cancelling a Draft removes it from the active list without affecting anyone, because no signer has received a link.

  1. Open the envelope from Envelopes.

  2. At the bottom of the page, press Cancel Envelope.

  3. The Cancel Envelope dialog asks for confirmation: “Are you sure you want to cancel this envelope? This action cannot be undone and all pending signatures will be invalidated.” Confirm with Cancel Envelope.

  4. The status changes to Cancelled.

If the application shows “Could not cancel the envelope”, reload the page: someone else may have cancelled or completed it at that moment. If the message repeats, copy the reference shown in the notice and send it to your administrator.

From the moment of cancellation, every signer’s link opens the Link Unavailable page and automatic reminders stop. Signatures already made remain in the envelope’s audit trail. The signed PDF is generated only for completed envelopes. If your organization uses webhooks, the envelope.cancelled event is published at that moment.

Cancellation is final. To continue, create a new envelope, upload the documents again and add the signers, who will receive new links.

The cancelled envelope stays visible in Envelopes, with its original documents and its audit trail, for 30 days from its creation; then it moves to Archived envelopes.
